On Monday, July, 29, and Wednesday, July, 31, I had lectures about teaching pronunciation with Christina. The lectures were about the importance of pronunciation for the students and how to pronounce the stressed words. The importance of teaching pronunciation to our students is that our students will improve their listening comprehension skill because it will be easier for them to distinguish vocabularies via their pronunciation. Another important thing, in my opinion, is that pronunciation is very significant for the students to improve their reading skill because reading is the pronunciation of words and English language consists of many words that look the same but pronounced differently and have different meanings. Word stress is also another important topic in pronunciation. It is usually useful, engaging, and fun to teach. Thus, what was included in Christina's lecture is stressed words and how to pronounce these words differently according to the stress pattern and their position in the sentence. I found the lectures really influential since they were delivered in a very obvious and simple way. The other thing that is necessary for me is that the importance of the lecture for my students in Iraq and how I can make it useful for them to learn pronunciation in class by avoiding the traditional way of teaching pronunciation. So, I think my students will love the way in which the lecture will be delivered to them as well as the usefulness of this lecture for them since they will learn how to stress words and pronounce them differently. The thing that I missed in this lecture is only the difference between the British and the American pronunciation since many people mixed between the two accents and would love to distinguish between the two. So I wish I could have a lecture about this topic with many details about the essential differences between the two accents as well as the similarities. My students in Iraq get confused differentiating between the two and which one the should follow.
I am glad you enjoyed the workshop. Honestly, I would not worry about the differences as I said in the workshop. Instead, I would simply focus on teaching English for international communication which means that you do not need to distinguish accents. Teach them that English can use any accent and expose them to people speaking English from all over the world.
